Newfoundland Adventure

Meet Some of Our Team

Wildland Tours’ guides are local, experienced, holiday leaders boasting impressive credentials.

Our leaders are our most important resource. Their knowledge is wide and diverse; the sort that doesn’t usually make it into the travel information books – unless one of them is writing the book! Expect a fun and remarkable local host for your vacation.

Newfoundland and Labrador presents dozens of logistical challenges for anybody coordinating a tour or learning holiday. There are travel routes without public washrooms or other basic services; yet these areas feature sites of international significance and world-class life experiences. Sometimes, these remote locations even lack the support of a simple plaque or sign!

Wildland Tours’ years of experience has allowed us to connect to many vital resource people around the province as well – whether it be someone with a good well, willing to provide visitors with a clean washroom or a retired fisherman who protects the “secret” nesting site of an endangered bird. Other important connections are associated with our parks, museums, ecological reserves, and other protected areas. Every year our leaders and guests make new discoveries and contributions and Wildland Tours’ knowledge base expands.

Ann Simmons, Operations Manager

Time goes fast when you are having fun! Ann Simmons joined the staff of Wildland Tours in 2001, returning to her home province after 15 years on the mainland where she worked as an event planner and creative soul with a Nova Scotia advertising company. She quickly became a key player in running the logistics of Wildland Tours and continues today to ‘steer the course’ and fulfill Dave’s mission following his untimely passing in 2017.

Today, Ann is many things. She is still one of the cheery voices on the phone when folks call to discuss the province’s whales, wildlife, and vacation highlights. As well, she is immersed in creating documents, itineraries, contracts, and more for our clients from around the world; whether they be from the cruise ship industry, conventions and event planning, or guests gearing up to enjoy one of our provincial adventures. Ann oversees and coordinates the Wildland Tours Team; office and store staff, plus hundreds of seasonal staff throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • Wildland Tours - Ann Simmons

Ann says there are too many experiences to ponder over the years but counts the viewing of polar bears in Northern Labrador and adventures among the whales of eastern Newfoundland among her favorite Wildland Tours experiences. Another favorite highlight is meeting our guests and sharing stories of travel, adventure, and wildlife from around the world.

Newfoundland Vacations

Mark Tsang, Tour Leader

Mark Tsang is one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s best known skiing and winter sports enthusiasts. Working with us for springs, summers, and falls since 1997, Mark has led most of our Viking Trail Experience holidays. He specializes in outdoor explorations for travellers interested in the wildlife and wilderness of Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula and Southern Labrador.

An avid photographer, Mark has sold his work to international outdoors magazines and is a contributor to Wildland Tours’ photo library. Mark is also our resident fossil expert…and time traveller. He takes guests from the 1,000 year-old Viking settlement to fossil beds boasting the remains of 520 million year-old trilobites to a site that preserves the 3.3 billion year-old primordial ooze that is believed to have generated the first life on earth.

A collection of Mark’s nature photography can be viewed on Flickr at ‘Mark Robertson Tsang’.

Jared Clarke, Tour Leader

A native Newfoundlander, Jared Clarke, grew up on the northeast coast of the province and was introduced to the outdoors at a very young age – mostly by his grandfathers. Jared has become one of this province’s best known local naturalists and we are delighted to have him lead excursions for us over the years.

He became interested in birds while working for a local conservation group and never looked back. Locally he is well known as an occasional newspaper columnist writing about birds, however, ours are not birding tours. Guests soon discover Jared is a well-rounded naturalist and leader equally comfortable with the whales, butterflies, and wildflowers... don’t worry about the word “bird”. He has led nature tours and workshops big and small across this province combining his keen knowledge of local birds with a broad base of natural and cultural history.

Jared is also a husband and father of two beautiful little girls. Check out his professional bird site and profile, and we encourage you to check out all of Jared’s photos.

Calved from Greenland glaciers, thousands of these giants journey here to greet you!

Blue and crystal hues of mammoth icebergs drift beside our shores along ‘iceberg alley’.

Will you look so good when you are 15,000 years old?!!

Darrell Penney, Tour Leader

In 1988, high school teacher Darrell Penney found himself working in the adjacent classroom to a temporary replacement biology teacher. The two teachers discovered they shared a love of the outdoors; they organized some field trips together, including one where they showed the kids how to catch trout with their bare hands. A few months later, Darrell met with that same replacement teacher – our company’s founder Dave Snow – to discuss leading a few summer walking tours for UK guests. Darrell recently retired from teaching to spend more time touring, exploring, and time with his family; especially his four grandchildren; Greyson, Jayden, Elara, and Atlas. As well, Darrel continues to be a popular summertime holiday leader with us.

A native of Corner Brook on Newfoundland’s west coast, Darrell grew up in the region skiing, boating, snowshoeing, salmon fishing, and walking in the great outdoors. Joining Wildland Tours as a holiday leader has allowed him to once again explore the natural areas, outports, and wildlife of the regions of Newfoundland and Labrador that he himself enjoyed as a student. Darrell has stayed closely connected with the land and sea and brings his passion and knowledge with him on every tour. When not leading tours, Darrell uses his designation as a professional prospector exploring the province from Northern Labrador to remote coastal islands.

  • Wildland Tours - Darrell Penney

Darrell’s sharp eyes have provided important sightings of rare North Atlantic whales along the Newfoundland coast. In 1998, Darrell brought a significant archaeological find to the province’s university when a local fisherman took Darrell’s tour group to view what turned out to be 18th century etchings in stone created by hopeful settlers on their way to the New World. These travellers were bound for America only to be captured and held hostage by pirates on a coastal island. Forced to sit day after day in the flat bedrock valley of a small bay, the hostages etched elaborate images into the rock illustrating the pirate vessels, the flags of the day, the distant Royal Navy vessels that were attempting to capture the pirates, and the names and stories of hostages... all providing remarkable physical insights into that distant time

Greg Stroud, Birding Leader

Greg Stroud is a native Newfoundlander who spends most of his life outdoors enjoying nature. After graduating from university with a biology degree he started his career with Parks Canada as a park naturalist specializing in botany and birds. Today, he is still working with Parks Canada and is in Churchill, Manitoba, mingling with the polar bears and belugas.

When he is not working he is chasing birds and photographing plants and insects. For the past 30 years birding has been his main passion taking him to all corners of the continent. In addition to birding he is an avid kayaker and sailor always looking for the next adventure in life.

Greg has used some of his vacation time to work as an expedition cruise ship naturalist and as a birding tour leader for several groups travelling with Wildland Tours. Out of all of the places he has travelled, his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador remains his favorite place in the world, especially Cape St. Mary’s which he describes as more of a spiritual experience than a birding destination.

Jane Smith Parsons, Tour Leader

Jane Smith Parsons’ passion to share her knowledge about all things Newfoundland and Labrador with every guest she meets comes from her travels and work experiences around the province, diverse career, and educational background. She is proud to sometimes be referred to as the ‘Forrest Gump’ of tourism. Her love of nature began at a very early age as a Brownie when her Girl Guide leaders would take her on outdoor excursions. The first time she unrolled a leaf and found a caterpillar inside, she was hooked! Jane became a Scout leader at the age of sixteen and has mentored all ages in many areas through the years in cultural, geological and natural history; whether it be while she was a park naturalist, an environmental educator, a post secondary instructor, a community engagement officer, a volunteer, and more. Jane learned the love of birding from some of the best when she would open the gates of the Memorial University Botanical Garden two hours ahead of her scheduled shift every Sunday. She later had the first definitive sighting for the very rare Rufous Hummingbird and the very rare Harris Sparrow in the province.

  • Wildland Tours - Jane Smith Parsons

Jane is a true naturalist; a lover and broad knowledge of all things. Trees and plant identification are her true passion, probably because of her forestry training; she loves bugs, fish, and critters of all kinds. As an avid gardener, with butterfly gardening being her obsession, Jane knows the importance of planting stinging nettle in the back of the flower beds and fights to not mow the dandelions! She grew up on the beach overlooking Conception Bay and so needs no introduction to beach combing and the wonders of the oceans and all that resides there. She has studied and worked with freshwater riparian systems as well. One of Jane's many exciting passion point for Newfoundland and Labrador was when UNESCO Heritage Site status was achieved for Mistaken Point on July 17th, 2016 for which she had served as Community Engagement Officer in pursuing the ‘criterion viii’ designation; no coincidence the date was one of her five sons’ birthdays! In the winter months you will find Jane and her husband Craig travelling whenever/wherever possible, and enjoying life with their family and friends.

Stewart Cochrane, Tour Leader

For the past fifteen years, Stewart has been passionate about “sharing” the story of Newfoundland and Labrador with his Wildland Tours' guests. He is a retired geologist with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Stewart is quick to say that he is very fortunate that his work experience took him to many isolated and quaint locations around the province, all the whilst learning about the natural and cultural histories of this unique corner of the globe, in addition to the geological history.

  • Wildland Tours - Stewart Cochrane

Stewart is a transplanted Scotsman who has called Newfoundland and Labrador home for 40 years. He is an avid fly fisher, skier, and sometimes hockey player. Married and father of three, Stewart resides in Pasadena on the island of Newfoundland’s beautiful west coast. He is always eager to meet guests from all over the world and to pass on his knowledge of the history and culture of this beautiful province! Stewart always has a story to share no matter what part of our home you are visiting!
